Mid to Senior Web Game Developer

Help us build great games for brands!

Are you a creative programmer? Love games? Have you coded a few of your own (either for work or for fun)? If you’re as comfortable writing back-end server logic as you are tweaking easing characteristics on some front-end UI, this might be the role for you!

Peek & Poke are a Sheffield based digital studio making browser-based games for a variety of businesses, charities and media companies that want to promote their brand in fun and interesting ways.

We believe (very strongly) that these games must be first and foremost fun to play, but they also need to work hard as a marketing tool to deliver excellent return on investment for the brands that commission them. It’s our aim to deliver positive experiences for the players and lasting connections for the brands.

The games are mostly delivered online, but also offline in a range of devices for use at trade shows or in-store (e.g. iPads, touch-screens, Arcade Machines, etc).

Due to some recent growth, we are in need of an experienced technologist to join the team and take the lead in the development of new game engines and systems as well as ensuring our day-to-day projects are delivered to our usual standards. Ideally you’ll be a mid-weight to senior browser game developer with experience building full web stack systems, but we may consider applications from developers of all levels providing you can impress us with the right attitude and appropriate experience.

This is a varied role which will have you working closely with existing team members on a range of games deployed for different marketing scenarios. You’ll be responsible for all stages of the game development process, from the conception and prototyping phases through to final delivery and support. You’ll also need to work on our other internal systems and websites from time to time, whether that be automating some internal processes or adding features to our Shopify & WordPress websites.

We (currently) write our games in HAXE coupled with PHP/MySQL for the back end. Experience with these (or a keen willingness to learn) is therefore essential.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Love programming and have a passion for games and web technologies in general
  • Be able to demonstrate a portfolio of work, personal or academic projects
  • Enjoy problem solving and be able to supply creative technical solutions to meet the needs of the business and day-to-day game-based projects
  • Be enthusiastic and self-motivated
  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills with an eye for detail
  • Have some interest in (or experience of) digital marketing
  • Be comfortable speaking to clients from time to time in terms they understand

And also be able to demonstrate experience (either professional, academic or personal) with most of the following:

  • Scripting languages (JavaScript, C#, Haxe)
  • Back-end systems & databases (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, Node.js)
  • Basic understanding of Adobe Photoshop / Illustrator / Animate
  • Web mark-up (HTML5, XML, CSS3)
  • OOP methodologies and design patterns
  • Source control (SVN, GIT, etc)
  • Cloud infrastructure (e.g. Google App Engine, AWS, Azure, etc)
  • Configuring hardware systems (Simple web servers, networking, etc)

The following would also be useful:

  • Hybrid & Progressive App Development
  • WordPress development
  • Shopify development (Liquid)
  • Programming languages (C++, Objective-C, Java)
  • Game Engines (Unity, Phaser, OpenFL)
  • A good understanding of 3D math and 2D physics
  • Physical Computing / Hardware hacking (Raspberry Pi / Arduino)
  • Basic Audio / Video editing (e.g. Audition / Premiere)
  • A well thought out plan for surviving the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse

Team culture

We are a hard-working, friendly team who enjoy what we do. Many of us are parents so having flexible working hours is important to us. Team drinks and trips to the board-game café are fairly regular events and we all enjoy cakes and biscuits to keep us going through the day at our SUM Studios home.

Salary & hours

Dependant on experience, but somewhere between £35K and £45K (plus pension and bonus). We would consider part-time applicants as well as full-time.
