2D Vector Illustrator / Game Artist

Come and work with us!

Hey! Are you a graphic designer or illustrator with some experience of 2D vector-based character and environment design? Are you comfortable working with existing brands and coming up with creative design solutions within technical, budgetary or brand-related constraints? Love games too? This could be the role for you!

Who are we?

Peek & Poke are a Sheffield-based studio making web-based (HTML5) games for marketers. We work with all sorts of businesses, charities and media companies who want to promote their brand and engage with their audience in fun and interesting ways. Some well-known examples of these include: ARM, Boohoo, Coors Light, DFDS, Domino’s, EE, Greene King, IBM, JD Sports, Kellogg’s, Kwik Fit, LV=, Nickelodeon, Pringles & Sky.

We strongly believe that these games must be first and foremost fun to play, but they also need to work hard as a marketing tool to deliver excellent return on investment for the brands that commission them. It’s our aim to deliver positive experiences for the players and lasting connections for the brands.

The games are usually delivered online, but sometimes also offline in a range of devices such as at tradeshows or in-store (e.g. iPads, touch-screens, arcade machines, etc.).

While we have had steady growth over the past few years, we have ambitious plans for the future and need you to help us achieve them.

Who are you?

We’re looking to hire a junior to middleweight game artist to support our existing art team in delivering client projects, coming up with new ideas and art styles for our games and adding some fresh design perspective to our overall output.

This role could suit a designer from an agency background who’s bored designing websites and is looking to get into games. Or it could equally be a good fit for an existing 2D game artist fed up with crunch and looking for a change of scenery and opportunity to try something a bit different. It may also suit someone fresh from university provided you have an appropriate portfolio of work and can demonstrate your ability to produce vector-based illustrations.

So long as you’re skilled with Adobe illustrator and can demonstrate you could produce work to our vector-based in-house style, then we’d love to hear from you.

Your main responsibilities would be:

  • Creating original graphics for games in our vector-based “flat art” house style
  • Re-skinning or re-imagining existing game artwork for various client brands
  • Getting involved in with the rest of the team to come up with new ideas for games, features & services
  • Designing marketing assets and promotional materials for in-house campaigns (mailers, e-books, website illustrations, etc.)

You must have:

  • A passion for illustration and character design
  • A portfolio of work demonstrating vector-based illustration and other different styles (Online, PDF or ZIP)
  • Excellent working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid understanding of art and design fundamentals
  • Be self-motivated, keen to learn and have a go at new approaches & styles
  • The full right to work within the UK

It would also be useful (but not essential) if you had:

  • Animation experience (e.g. Adobe Animate) would be highly advantageous
  • UX/UI design experience
  • Experience of game/level design
  • A passion for casual, mobile and/or browser games
  • Music production / Sound design experience
  • Familiarity with working in a creative, project-based work environment
  • A well thought out plan for surviving the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse

Team culture

We are a hard-working, friendly team who enjoy what we do. Many of us are parents so having flexible working hours is important to us. Team drinks and trips to the board-game café are fairly regular events and we all enjoy cakes and biscuits to keep us going through the day at our SUM Studios home.

The role is ordinarily based at our Sheffield offices, however due to the current COVID situation the role will be remote until further notice. We will likely return to a flexible approach once we feel it is appropriate to do so.

Salary & hours

Between £20K and £25K (Plus pension and bonus) depending on experience.

We may consider part-time applications as well as full-time.

How to apply

Please write us an informal letter or short story (At least 500 words) telling us a bit about you and your employment history to date, describing why you feel your experience makes you a great fit for this role. Email it along with your CV and portfolio to jobs@peekandpoke.com.

If you have any further questions about the role in the meantime, please feel free to email us or call 0114 399 1011.
